Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy in Basingstoke held a grading on 20th December to assess whether students had advanced enough to be promoted to their next level. All of the students were successful in passing their grading and demonstrated a high level of skill and commitment. The grading was split into two sections, with the lower grades attending the first session and the higher grades and adults attending the second. Both sessions included a one hour class prior to the grading for students to have a final practice. In the case of Katherine White who was attempting her Black Belt, her grading started with her having to teach a class under the watchful eyes of the senior examiners.
A number of students showed some significant improvements which resulted in them being awarded a double grade. These students are training several times per week and their hard work and effort is clearly paying off. All students had to demonstrate their fundamental techniques, sparring and forms. In order to be successful in their grading, they had to pass all three sections of the exam. The higher grades were extensively tested on both their technical ability and also their fighting spirit by having to do multiple rounds on the freestanding kickbags and the grappling dummies to see what they could produce under very tiring conditions. They then had multiple fights against one another.
We are now starting to see a number of students both adult and children start to reach senior Kyu grade ranks. This bodes well for the future and next year in particular if students keep up their commitment to training and their work ethic, will see several people attempting their Shodan (Black Belt) grading during the course of the next year.
Within Shin Gi Tai as one progresses the challenge to pass one’s grading rises, both mentally and physically with students testing being personalised to ensure that they are competent in those areas of Karate, that they may feel are not their strongest, but nonetheless it is important that they are able to perform well. But as this grading shows, the students continue to excel and their standards rise. So once again, well done again to everyone who passed their gradings, keep up the hard work and the rewards do come, you’ve proven this.
