Special Needs Children
Our karate club in Basingstoke has an objective to be socially inclusive regardless of age, race, gender or ability. There is no reason why your child can’t learn Martial Arts with us. We have successfully trained children with special needs including Physical disabilities, Autism, Aspergers, Dyspraxia and ADHD. There is no reason why we can’t inspire self-esteem in EVERY child and that includes children with special needs.
We would encourage parents who have a child with special needs to contact us, so that we can discuss together a suitable training plan based on your child’s requirements.
Training in karate can serve as an important corollary to other physical, behavioural and psychological treatment programs. When karate is taught with the appropriate teaching method, every child has the chance to feel like a success, whether in a group, semi-private, or private class session.
There is often a misconception, particularly where a child shows potentially violent tendencies, that teaching them a martial art will make them more violent. In fact, our experience has shown that martial arts training actually has the opposite effect. Through our structured teaching method, children have a safe outlet for their physical exuberance and work to develop self-control, helping them to manage fear, anger and frustration. They develop a respect for their own body as well as for others and can master the art of relaxation and breath control.
Many children with special needs have already benefited from karate classes with the Academy in Basingstoke.
Private classes are also available at convenient times throughout the day. When appropriate, parents can even participate in private training and join their children on the mat.
